Ever play a game that’s supposed to be deadly serious, but you find yourself cracking up more than sweating bullets? You’re not alone. Sometimes, game developers aim for intense drama, spine-chilling horror, or deep emotions — but what players get instead is an unintentional giggle-fest. Whether it's clunky animations, hilariously bad voice acting, or physics that make zero sense, some games just trip over themselves in the funniest ways possible.
Let’s dive into the world of games that weren’t meant to be funny... but totally, absolutely are.
Okay, so let’s get this out of the way: the original Resident Evil (especially the PS1 version) was trying so hard to be scary. Zombies? Creepy mansion? Mysterious viruses? Yeah, sounds like a nightmare.
But then you hear that voice acting. Oh. My. God.
Who could forget Barry’s legendary line:
> “You were almost a Jill sandwich!”
It’s straight-up comedy gold. The stiff characters, awkward pauses between sentences, and wooden gestures feel more like a middle school play than a full-blown horror game.
Don’t get me wrong — the game was revolutionary. But it also accidentally invented a whole new genre: survival humor.
This is one of those games where you’re never quite sure if the developers were trying to be funny… or just went completely off the rails.
We’re talking about a horror-mystery thriller where the protagonist talks to an imaginary friend named Zach, randomly shares his love for late '80s movies, and has conversations while driving that go on so long you forget what your mission was.
Weird? 100%.
Unintentionally hysterical? Definitely.
Between the awkward animations, janky controls, and bananas dialogue, Deadly Premonition is like watching a cult horror movie that’s so bad, it’s amazing.
Bethesda, we love you. Truly. But let’s be real — Skyrim is a glitchy mess. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
From NPCs walking straight into fires like they’ve had a bad day, to dragons flying backward, the bugs in Skyrim have provided more laughs than most comedy games ever could.
And let’s not forget the arrow to the knee meme that took over the internet for years. At this point, “I used to be an adventurer like you…” is gaming’s version of dad jokes.
Skyrim may be an epic RPG, but it’s also an accidental slapstick comedy show.
Hideo Kojima’s brainchild is known for mind-bending plots, tactical espionage, and cinematic cutscenes longer than most movies. But it’s also jam-packed with ridiculously hilarious moments.
Let’s start with Snake hiding in a cardboard box like that’s a totally normal thing to do… in a high-security military base. Or how about the over-the-top boss fights, like Psycho Mantis reading your memory card and making your controller move? Wild.
And then there’s the infamous “Nanomachines, son” line that sounds ripped straight from a parody anime.
Is Metal Gear Solid meant to be a comedy? Nope. Does it make you laugh anyway? Every. Single. Time.
The Sims isn't really meant to be a comedy game — it’s a life simulation. But come on, how could anyone take it seriously for long?
Watch your Sim casually wet themselves in the kitchen, then die laughing while the Grim Reaper shows up in a hoodie to take them away. Or see a fire break out while your Sims keep eating spaghetti like nothing’s happening.
The true comedy in The Sims comes from the unexpected. AI decisions that make no sense, bizarre social interactions, and physics that operate on dream logic all combine to turn your virtual household into a circus.
Trying to play The Sims as a legit life sim is like trying to herd cats. It’s chaos — and it’s hilarious.
Heavy Rain wants to be serious. It wants to make you feel. It has loss, trauma, dark secrets — all the emotional gut punches you’d expect from a psychological thriller.
Then you press X to "JAAAAASON!"
If you've played it, you know. That single word, yelled again and again in the most hilariously wooden tone, turned a tragic scene into internet comedy gold. The meme potential? Off the charts.
And don't even get us started on the awkward walking mechanics or the fact that your character can shout various names at random points like he forgot which kid he's looking for.
Serious story, unintentional sitcom energy.
The Assassin’s Creed series is supposed to be slick, stealthy, and historically immersive. But when you see your character faceplant off a rooftop because the parkour system had an off day — all bets are off.
Or how about when you’re trying to blend in with a crowd but accidentally punch a civilian and start a whole riot? Or witness an NPC float into the sky like a wizard?
Credit where it’s due: Ubisoft’s world-building is impressive. But sometimes, those serious assassin vibes give way to some of the funniest glitches in gaming history.
Nukes have dropped, the world is in ruins... but apparently humanity didn’t lose its sense of humor.
Whether it's the over-the-top V.A.T.S. kill cams, bizarre NPC convos, or the ridiculous situations you find yourself in (like a cult that worships an unexploded bomb), Fallout doesn't hold back.
Yes, there’s intentional dark humor in there. But the real laughs often come from the janky A.I., weird facial expressions, or the moment you enter a peaceful-looking town and suddenly step on a landmine because... why not?
Post-apocalyptic absurdity at its finest.
Dark Souls is notorious for its difficulty. It’s meant to be gritty, punishing, even a little depressing. But what many players don’t talk about enough? It’s unintentionally funny as heck.
You’re walking down a corridor, eyes peeled, everything tense — and then BAM! A giant boulder crushes you, and it’s so sudden you can’t help but laugh. Or you get killed by an enemy that falls on you... after you’ve already defeated it. Classic FromSoftware.
And the NPCs? Odd, cryptic, and sometimes straight-up nonsensical. It’s like wandering through a medieval version of a Wes Anderson movie.
Dark Souls makes you laugh at your own misery, and that’s strangely beautiful.
Let’s end on a high note. Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 is often praised for its realism, depth, and emotional storytelling. But let’s not act like it didn’t also give us some of the most surreal bugs of all time.
Like NPCs flying into the sky for no reason. Or horses running headfirst into trees. Or Arthur Morgan randomly T-posing in the middle of a shootout like he’s auditioning for a dance troupe.
Not to mention the voice lines that sometimes don’t load properly, leading to awkward silence while everyone stands around waiting for the plot to continue.
Red Dead 2 might have been made with drama in mind, but sometimes it delivers slapstick comedy in its purest form.
What makes these unintentionally funny games so lovable isn’t their perfection — it’s the opposite. It’s the weird bugs, the strange voice acting, the broken AI, and the wonky physics that make them feel human. They remind us that even in the most serious worlds, there’s always room for a good laugh.
And let’s be honest — sometimes, laughter is the best loot.

Great article! It's fascinating how unexpected humor can emerge from serious games. It reminds us that laughter often finds its way into the most unlikely places!
