It started with a gray box and two cartridges. Thirty years ago, I did not know that a Super Nintendo and a pair of games would set the course for my entire adult life. I just knew that something felt different the first time I pressed the power button.
The games were Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. On the surface, they were simple distractions. But for a kid who had only known the blunt challenge of arcade cabinets, these worlds offered something else. They had secrets tucked into corners. They had music that stuck in your head for days. They had a quiet sense that you were being trusted to figure things out on your own.
I did not realize it then, but that console was teaching me how to pay attention. I learned to notice the odd brick that looked slightly out of place. I learned that patience was not a punishment but a tool. I learned that a story could be told without cutscenes or dialogue, just through atmosphere and the way a forest path curved.
Years later, I found myself writing about games for a living. That is not a coincidence. The same instinct that made me pull every lever in a dungeon just to see what happened is the instinct that makes me dig into a game's design today. That little gray box did not just entertain me. It rewired how I think.
I still have that console, though it no longer works. But I do not need it to. The lessons are still there, tucked into my memory like a hidden power-up. Thirty years on, I am still chasing that first feeling of discovery. And I am grateful I never caught it.
