Amazon (AMZN) Says Streaming Is the Future of Video Games as Console Prices Rise

Amazon (AMZN) Says Streaming Is the Future of Video Games as Console Prices Rise

Amazon's head of gaming has declared that cloud streaming is the inevitable future of video games, pointing to the rising price of consoles as a key driver. As the cost of new PlayStation and Xbox hardware continues to climb, the executive argued that more players will abandon traditional boxes in favor of streaming games directly to their existing screens.

"People are already paying hundreds of dollars for a console, then another seventy for each game," the Amazon executive said in a recent interview. "That model is becoming harder to justify for the average household. Streaming removes that barrier."

The statement comes as Amazon doubles down on its Luna cloud gaming service, which lets subscribers play titles on smart TVs, tablets, and phones without a dedicated console. The company sees this as a direct answer to the industry's growing affordability problem. With the latest generation of consoles often exceeding five hundred dollars, and game prices creeping toward seventy or eighty dollars, Amazon believes casual and mid-core gamers will eventually choose a subscription-based streaming model over a large upfront investment.

Critics point out that cloud gaming still faces hurdles, including latency issues and the need for a stable high-speed internet connection. But Amazon argues that improvements in data center technology and wider broadband access will solve those problems within a few years. The company is betting that convenience and lower cost will win out, even if streaming quality is not yet perfect.

For now, Amazon Luna remains a niche player compared to giants like Microsoft's Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia's GeForce Now. But with console prices unlikely to drop anytime soon, Amazon's prediction may prove accurate for a growing number of budget-conscious gamers.
