A fan developer has managed to get the original Halo: Combat Evolved running inside a web browser, giving players a free way to revisit the 2001 first person shooter without installing anything.
The project uses a browser based port that loads the game's campaign and multiplayer content directly through a web page. According to the developer, the goal was to see whether the classic title could be preserved in a format that works on almost any modern device. Early tests show the game running at playable frame rates, though performance depends on the hardware and browser being used.
The port relies on reverse engineered code and community made tools rather than any official release from Microsoft or Bungie. Because of that, the developer has been careful to avoid distributing copyrighted assets. Players are expected to provide their own copy of the game files, which the browser build then reads locally.
Reactions from the Halo community have been mostly positive. Longtime fans see it as a technical curiosity and a way to keep the game alive on platforms that never received an official version. Others have raised questions about how long the project can stay online, since browser based game ports often attract legal attention.
For now, the developer says the focus is on stability and controller support. No release date has been set for a final version, but a public test build is already available for anyone curious enough to try it.
