Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a feature film based on Cyberpunk 2077, the open world role playing game from Polish studio CD Projekt Red. The studio will produce the project, while Paramount handles development and distribution. The announcement adds another major video game property to Hollywood's growing slate of adaptations.
Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020 after years of anticipation. The game is set in Night City, a sprawling metropolis built on corporate greed, body modification, and digital surveillance. Players take on the role of V, a mercenary chasing a path to immortality while sharing a mind with a digital ghost named Johnny Silverhand. The world first appeared in the tabletop role playing game Cyberpunk 2013, created by Mike Pondsmith.
The property already proved it could work outside gaming. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an animated series released on Netflix in 2022, earned strong reviews and pulled new players back into the game. That success likely helped push the film forward.
No director, writers, or cast members have been announced. Plot details remain under wraps, and it is unclear whether the film will adapt the game's main story or tell a new tale inside Night City. Release timing has not been set either.
Video game films have a mixed history, but recent entries like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Last of Us series have shown that strong source material and careful production can win over both fans and general audiences. Whether Night City can deliver the same result on the big screen is now the question.
