'End of an era': Players lament decline of the disc at Gamescom

Some video game fans are in disbelief after Sony announced it will stop selling physical discs starting in 2028, a move revealed during this year's Gamescom trade show in Germany. The news has sparked frustration across online communities, with many players calling for a boycott of the company's upcoming console lineup.

For decades, the disc has been a staple of gaming culture. Collectors, bargain hunters, and those with slow internet connections have relied on physical copies for everything from day-one patches to reselling old titles. Now, with Sony's shift toward an all-digital future, those players say they feel left behind. "It's the end of an era," one attendee told reporters on the show floor. "I grew up swapping cartridges and discs with friends. That whole experience is just gone."

The announcement comes as no surprise to industry analysts, who have watched digital sales climb steadily over the past ten years. But for many fans, the speed of the transition is the real issue. "They're pushing this before the infrastructure is ready," said a longtime PlayStation owner. "Not everyone has fiber optic. Not everyone wants to rent their games forever." Others worry about preservation, pointing out that digital storefronts can shut down, leaving entire libraries unplayable.

Despite the backlash, Sony has not commented on the boycott calls. Meanwhile, smaller studios and indie developers see an opportunity, promising to keep physical releases alive for as long as there is demand. For now, though, the mood at Gamescom is bittersweet. The show still buzzes with new trailers and hardware, but the hum of disc drives spinning up is getting quieter by the year.
