First Michigan Retro Game Expo draws big turnout in Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo played host to a packed house on Saturday as the Michigan Retro Game Expo brought together fans of classic consoles, arcade cabinets, and old-school gaming culture. Organizers reported a strong turnout, with attendees lining up before doors opened at the convention center.

The expo featured everything from Atari and NES carts to rare Sega Saturn titles and refurbished CRT televisions. Vendors lined the main hall, selling games, controllers, posters, and custom-built arcade sticks. A free-play area let visitors try out dozens of systems, including a working Intellivision and a row of pinball machines from the 1970s and 80s.

Many attendees came in costume, with a few dressed as iconic characters like Mario, Sonic, and a surprisingly accurate Duke Nukem. Local gaming clubs set up tables for tournaments, including a high-stakes Street Fighter II bracket that drew a crowd of onlookers. Younger kids mostly stuck to the Lego-themed retro builds and a table of handhelds like the Game Boy Color and the original DS.

Organizers said the event was the largest yet, with tickets selling out by early afternoon. They are already planning next year's show, promising more space and a few surprise guests from the early days of the industry. For many in the crowd, the expo was less about nostalgia and more about proving that pixelated classics still hold up against modern blockbusters.
