A new divide is emerging among younger generations: the difference between playing video games and identifying as a gamer. While millions of Gen Z and Millennials spend hours on titles like Fortnite, Call of Duty, or Animal Crossing, many of them do not call themselves gamers. The label carries baggage that the act of playing does not.
For some, the term "gamer" feels tied to a toxic culture of online harassment, gatekeeping, and competitive pressure. Others associate it with a hardcore identity that demands specific hardware, skill levels, or time commitments. A person might play a mobile puzzle game during a commute or join a weekly Mario Kart session with friends, yet reject the label entirely because they do not see themselves as part of that community.
This shift reflects how gaming has become a mainstream activity rather than a niche hobby. Playing games is now as normal as watching Netflix or scrolling social media. The identity of a gamer, however, still carries stereotypes about who belongs. Many younger players prefer to say they "play games" rather than "are gamers," keeping the activity separate from the identity.
The industry has noticed. Game developers and marketers are increasingly targeting "players" rather than "gamers," recognizing that the audience is broader and more casual than ever. For Gen Z and Millennials, the act of playing is universal, but the label remains a choice.
