God of War: Laufey Could Finally Give Us a Mother's Story in Gaming

God of War: Laufey Could Finally Give Us a Mother's Story in Gaming

After years of games focused on fatherhood, the upcoming God of War spin-off has a real chance to shift the narrative. For the better part of a decade, the franchise has been defined by Kratos struggling to connect with his son Atreus. It was a powerful arc, no doubt, but it also reflected a broader trend in the industry. We have seen countless "dad games" where the core emotional weight rests on a father protecting or teaching a child. The Last of Us, The Walking Dead, and even the recent God of War entries all leaned heavily into this dynamic. It worked, but it also left a gap.

Now, with God of War: Laufey reportedly focusing on Kratos' late wife, the developer has a rare opportunity. Laufey was a giant, a warrior, and a mother who raised Atreus alone after Kratos disappeared. Her story is not just about combat or prophecy. It is about survival, sacrifice, and the unique pressures of motherhood in a brutal world. Gaming has rarely given us a deep, playable perspective on a mother's journey. We get the stoic father, the reluctant uncle, the brother figure. But the mother is often a memory, a motivation, or a corpse.

This spin-off could change that. It could explore the quiet terror of raising a child while hiding from gods, the physical toll of protecting a family without a partner, and the emotional complexity of a woman who chose to love a broken man like Kratos. If the developers lean into that, they will not just make another good action game. They will fill a void that the industry has ignored for too long. A decade of dad games was fine. But it is time for a mother's story.
