An upcoming puzzle-platformer called Screenbound is generating buzz with its unique dual-perspective gameplay, which its developers whimsically refer to as a "5D" experience. The game seamlessly merges a 3D world with a 2D one, requiring players to engage with both simultaneously.
Players control a character named Pavi, who explores a mysterious realm while holding a handheld device called a Qboy. The primary screen displays a rich 3D environment from Pavi's viewpoint. Meanwhile, the Qboy screen shows a classic 2D, Game Boy-style representation of that same world. The core gameplay revolves around the dynamic interaction between these two planes. Objects, platforms, and hazards may exist only in one dimension, forcing players to constantly shift their attention to solve puzzles and navigate the environment. For instance, a gap in the 3D world might only be crossed by collecting an item visible solely on the 2D screen.
Inspired by the dual-screen mechanics of the Nintendo DS, the developers carefully designed the interface to avoid overwhelming players, ensuring the 3D view remains the primary focus while the 2D screen serves as a crucial interactive map. The concept originated from a developer's real-life moment of playing a game on a handheld while walking in the woods, sparking the idea to blend virtual and perceptual layers.
Currently in development with a planned release for late 2026 on major consoles and PC, Screenbound promises a truly novel gameplay loop that challenges perception and problem-solving in a way only video games can achieve.
