Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Review: A Return to Boots on the Ground

While almost every Call of Duty release included a full-fledged campaign, it's hard to deny that the main draw in the franchise has always been the multiplayer component. It's gotten to the point where many players skip the story mode entirely and jump straight into online matches. Modern Warfare 4 tries to change that calculation, and for the most part, it succeeds.

The campaign puts players back in the boots of familiar operators while introducing a handful of new faces. The pacing is tighter than recent entries, with missions that alternate between quiet infiltration sequences and loud, chaotic firefights. There is a welcome emphasis on grounded combat. No wall-running, no jetpacks, just careful movement through urban environments where a single wrong corner can end the run.

What stands out most is the attention to atmosphere. Rain-soaked streets, crumbling buildings, and distant radio chatter build tension before the shooting starts. The story does not reinvent the wheel, but it avoids the worst excesses of past entries. Characters make decisions that feel motivated rather than scripted, and the quieter moments between missions give the action room to breathe.

There are missteps. A few set pieces drag on longer than needed, and one stealth section feels out of place. Still, the campaign delivers a focused, well-paced experience that respects the player's time. It may not be the reason most people buy the game, but this time it is worth playing.
