Nintendo Rolls Out Firmware 23.0.0 for Switch and Switch 2

Nintendo has pushed a new system update, version 23.0.0, for both the original Switch and the Switch 2. The patch brings a handful of changes, with the most notable addition being variable refresh rate support on the newer console.

Variable refresh rate, or VRR, allows a display to adjust its refresh rate on the fly to match the frame rate a game is producing. The result is smoother motion and less visible screen tearing, particularly in titles that struggle to hold a steady frame rate. Until now, Switch 2 owners had no way to take advantage of the feature, even on compatible televisions.

The update also includes general system stability improvements, a standard line in Nintendo's patch notes that typically covers behind the scenes fixes. Users may notice small adjustments to menu responsiveness and network behavior, though Nintendo has not detailed every change.

Installation works the same way as previous updates. Consoles connected to the internet will download version 23.0.0 automatically in the background, and a prompt will appear once it is ready. Those who prefer to update manually can do so through the system settings menu.

Nintendo has not indicated whether further features are planned for a later release. For now, the VRR addition gives Switch 2 owners a meaningful upgrade, especially for fast paced games where frame pacing matters most.
