Does playing video games make you better at judging distances and visualizing objects? A new study of university students found no link between playing video games and performing well on real-world visual or auditory spatial tasks. Researchers tested over 200 young adults on their ability to track moving sounds, mentally rotate objects, and judge the location of hidden items. Participants also reported how often they played video games, from casual mobile games to intense action titles. The results surprised many: frequent gamers did not score higher on any of the spatial tests compared to non-gamers.
The study's authors suggest that while video games may improve hand-eye coordination within a game's specific environment, those skills do not transfer to everyday spatial challenges. For example, someone who excels at navigating a complex game world might still struggle to assemble furniture or park a car. The findings challenge the popular belief that gaming sharpens general spatial intelligence. Instead, the researchers propose that natural talent or other activities, like sports or drawing, may be more important for developing these abilities. The study also noted that the type of game did not matter. Whether students played fast-paced shooters or slow puzzle games, their test performance remained similar. This suggests that the brain's spatial processing system is not easily trained by screen-based tasks alone. The authors call for more research into how different real-world experiences shape spatial thinking.
