The Federal Aviation Administration is getting creative in its push to fill a critical shortage of air traffic controllers. The agency says its recent recruiting efforts, which specifically targeted video gamers, have helped it reach 94 percent of its hiring goal for this fiscal year. That is a significant improvement after years of struggling to keep up with retirements and attrition.
The idea is simple. Gamers often have strong hand-eye coordination, quick reaction times, and the ability to track multiple moving objects on a screen. Those skills, the FAA argues, translate well to the job of managing planes on radar scopes. The agency has been running targeted ads on gaming platforms and even set up recruitment booths at major esports events. The campaign seems to be working, drawing in a younger and more diverse pool of applicants than traditional outreach.
Still, hitting the hiring target is only the first step. The real bottleneck remains training. New controllers must go through the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, followed by months or years of on-the-job training at actual facilities. The agency has faced criticism in the past for not having enough instructors and for slow certification processes. Even with the recent hiring success, the controller workforce is still below pre-pandemic levels, and fatigue among current staff remains a serious safety concern.
The FAA says it will keep pushing the gaming angle while also expanding recruitment to colleges and military veterans. But officials acknowledge that filling the gap is a long-term project, not a quick fix. For now, the agency is just glad to see the numbers moving in the right direction.
