A cause of death was officially released Tuesday for Vince Zampella, the renowned video game developer behind the Call of Duty franchise, who died in a December car crash on Southern California’s Angeles Crest Highway. According to the medical examiner’s report, Zampella succumbed to thermal injuries and smoke inhalation. Blunt trauma was also listed as an other significant condition contributing to his death.
Zampella, 56, was a towering figure in the gaming industry, best known for co-creating the blockbuster Call of Duty series and later leading Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind Titanfall and Apex Legends. The fatal incident occurred when his Ferrari crashed along the notoriously winding mountain road, a popular but dangerous route for sports car enthusiasts. Emergency responders arrived to find the vehicle engulfed in flames, and Zampella was pronounced dead at the scene.
The news has sent shockwaves through the gaming community, where Zampella was celebrated not only for his commercial successes but also for his influence on the first-person shooter genre. His death marks a profound loss for an industry he helped shape over three decades.
