Modder Uncovers Over 1,000 Unused Voice Lines from RE4 and Requiem

A dedicated modder has pulled back the curtain on a trove of unused audio from two major survival horror titles, discovering more than 1,000 voice lines that never made it into the final games. The find covers both the Resident Evil 4 remake and the lesser-known fan project or internal build referred to as Requiem, though the exact nature of that second project remains unclear.

The voice files include alternate takes of existing dialogue, unused enemy chatter, and, most strikingly, fully recorded lines where infected characters plead for mercy or cry out in pain. In the final versions of these games, the infected mostly growl, hiss, or shriek. But these cut recordings show a different direction, one where the monsters sound more human, almost aware of what is happening to them. Some lines are simple, like a hoarse whisper asking for help, while others are longer, fragmented sentences that suggest a scrapped story beat where the infection left traces of the original person intact.

The modder, who shared the files on a public forum, said the discovery was accidental. They were digging through the game's audio banks to fix a minor bug when they noticed a folder labeled "alternate" that contained far more files than expected. After sorting through the recordings, they found multiple takes for nearly every major character, plus dozens of unnamed background voices. Some lines match scenes that were cut entirely, hinting at a version of the story where the player could interact with the infected in a non-combat way, or where certain boss fights had a longer, more tragic preamble.

Capcom has not commented on the leak, and it is unclear if these lines were cut for pacing, technical reasons, or because they made the horror too sympathetic. For fans, the discovery adds a new layer to the games' lore. Hearing a Ganado whisper "please, don't" before attacking changes the weight of every encounter. The modder has not yet released the files publicly, but they say they plan to package them into an easy-to-install mod that lets players hear the lines in context, either by triggering them during gameplay or through a dedicated audio player. Until then, the clips are circulating in short videos, and they are already sparking debate about what else might be hiding in the game's code.
