The gothic horror setting known as Ravenloft has grown far beyond its tabletop roots. With a Netflix show and a video game currently in development, the franchise now reaches audiences who may never have rolled a twenty-sided die. Yet its beginnings were far more modest than its current profile suggests.
Ravenloft began as a homebrew campaign created by Tracy and Laura Hickman during their time at TSR. The original adventure, first published in 1983, introduced players to Count Strahd von Zarovich, a vampire lord ruling over the land of Barovia. What started as a single module soon expanded into a full campaign setting, complete with its own rules for fear, horror, and madness.
The setting's appeal lies in its mix of classic monster tropes and psychological dread. Unlike traditional fantasy worlds built for heroic conquest, Ravenloft traps players in a realm where escape is never guaranteed and morality is often tested. That formula has proven durable across decades and multiple editions of the game.
Now, with streaming and interactive adaptations on the way, the setting once confined to a kitchen table is poised to haunt a much larger audience.
