RGG Studio has quietly crafted something unexpected with its upcoming Virtua Fighter game. According to the development team, the project has evolved into a spiritual successor to Shenmue, a connection that was never part of Sega's original plan. Yu Suzuki, the legendary creator behind both franchises, has reportedly expressed that this new direction aligns with a vision he always dreamed of.
The game, currently known as Virtua Fighter Crossroads, blends the signature hard-hitting martial arts combat of the series with deeper exploration and narrative elements reminiscent of Shenmue's open-world style. RGG Studio, best known for the Yakuza and Like a Dragon series, brought its experience in crafting dense, interactive urban environments to the table. The result is a Virtua Fighter title that feels less like a straightforward fighting game and more like a living, breathing world where players can walk through dojos, interact with characters, and uncover stories between matches.
Suzuki has long spoken about his desire to merge the two franchises, but Sega never greenlit a direct crossover. Now, RGG Studio has effectively made that happen by accident. The team initially set out to modernize Virtua Fighter's core mechanics, but the project naturally grew as they added more world-building and character-driven content. What emerged is a game that honors both legacies without explicitly being called Shenmue.
Fans of the Dreamcast classic will find familiar touches: detailed recreations of Japanese locales, a focus on martial arts philosophy, and a slow-burn story about rivalry and redemption. For Virtua Fighter purists, the combat remains tight and technical, with new systems that reward precision over button-mashing. RGG Studio insists this is still a Virtua Fighter game at heart, but one that finally gives Suzuki's long-held dream a proper home.
